Isabel was born in 1940, during the Sheffield Blitz. Her paternal Grandfather (John William Horton) was a Commercial Artist, specialising in large-scale work.

Education was at Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School and Bretton Hall College. She subsequently taught Art at Beighton and Norfolk Park Secondary Schools.

Having married husband Graham in 1963, Isabel stopped teaching in 1967 to start a family. However, during this period Isabel took up a part time adult education post teaching Textiles, Machine Embroidery, Watercolour, Acrylics and Creative Needlework and has been responsible for organising several community artwork projects throughout Sheffield.

In 1988, she founded the Great Sheffield Art Show an event which has become a landmark on the thriving Sheffield art scene.
